Crescent City

Sweet Crescent City looks so pretty on my drive away day
Diamond ring on Louisiana
I aim my camera at the skyline as it fades away
But a picture won’t contain a thousand goodbyes
700 miles of highway blowing through my head
Blooms on Highway 10 ablaze in red
I shout out the window “Oh my love, farewell”
But one yell won’t contain a thousand goodbyes
I was so down and heavy hearted when I started this trip
Driving down to Louisiana
But she opened her big arms and said “Baby, you can tell me ‘bout it
Cuz everybody here is traumatized
And this town echoes ‘round with the sound of goodbyes”
So I sat down and ran that river dry
Goodbye to what I said when I was laying in your bed
Goodbye to empty shotguns and cities of the dead
Goodbye to what I promised myself under that crucifix
Goodbye like phantoms finally finding friends in moldy attics
Goodbye like bribes you pay and then hope for the best
Goodbye like prayers you pray as you cry and beat your chest
Goodbye to the illusion that we’d one day live in truth
Goodbye to the confusion from back when I thought I knew you
Goodbye like piles of crawfish, dead and delicious
And shots of bourbon helping me say goodbye to my wishes
Goodbye to that trust, goodbye to that faith
Goodbye to those ideas that kicked me in the face
Goodbye to that trust, goodbye to that faith
Goodbye to that faith
Sweet Crescent City looks so pretty on my drive away day
Diamond ring on Louisiana
I snap a picture but a picture won’t contain a thousand goodbyes

August
05:16
|

Layers and shelves of house plants can’t get me through the winter
When even they can’t stand the air that hits you like a splinter
When icy drafts come through the cracks in the rafters I’ll remember
Sunny days and golden rays and when I knew you better
When I knew you better
It might be August, but I can feel the winter bearing down
How can we say “I love you” and “I don’t trust you” with the same mouth
Really now
Right beyond us, I can tell there’s quicksand underground
How can we say “I love you” and “I don’t trust you” with the same mouth
Really now
A beautiful tan on a small man won’t make it past the summer
When colder breeze and autumn leaves will send them seeking cover
A beautiful bike in the porch light won’t even last the night sometimes
When ‘neath the wind chime lost boys climb that porch to smash and plunder
Smash and plunder
It might be August, but I can feel the winter bearing down
How can we say “I love you” and “I don’t trust you” with the same mouth
Really now
Right beyond us, I can tell there’s quicksand underground
How can we say “I love you” and “I don’t trust you” with the same mouth
Really now
It might be August, but I can feel the winter bearing down
How can we say “I love you” and “I don’t trust you” with the same mouth
Really now
Right beyond us, I can smell the cinders of our house
How can we say “I love you” and “I don’t trust you” with the same mouth
Really now

Polka Dot

There was a time I loved you for always being right
Polka dot philosophies perfected over tea time
I gave away my secrets to get in your tiny house
You let me live there happily until you threw me out
Now I know when you say you love me
You don’t mean you love me
You just mean you like having me around
Now I know if I ever need you
What I really need to do is find some other friend
There was a time I loved you for making no excuse
Unapologetically a wild one on the loose
You just grab your guitar and hop a bus to New Orleans
Even in your absence you were so inspiring
Now I know when you say you love me
You don’t mean you love me
You just mean you like having me around
Now I know if I ever need you
What I really need to do is find some other friend
There was a time I loved you for being so adored
You had a harem full of men and women
To hang on and obey your every word
But you manipulate to get just what you want
And then grin like a guru of living in the moment
Well I’m sorry if I’m not charming enough today
To help your rainbow-sprinkled cupcake to go down with ease
But you tricked me and made me think it was safe
To share what’s underneath the pin up paper doll version of me
Now I won’t say you made me need you
But I’ll say that you tried
And then I needed you and you got so surprised saying
“Why does this always happen to me?”
Well if this is not first time, maybe it’s your fault not mine
Maybe it’s your fault not mine
Now I know when you say you love me
You don’t mean you love me
You just mean you like having me around
Now I know if I ever need you
What I really need to do is find some other friend
Who will not let me down

Girl Get Your Bike
03:04
|

It was 7 o’clock on a Friday night
The sun just starting to sink in the sky
Seemed the place to be was the riverside
So I called him up and said “what are you doin’?
I see people pedaling two by two into a sun sun waterfront weekend paradise”
And he said “Ooh why don’t we go
Pedaling two by two like the people
Who clearly know what to do with a Friday night.”
He said “I got the mozzarella. Girl get your bike!”
At 11 o’clock the sun had gone down
We were lookin’ at the stars and lying around
I got it in my mind that we should head to town
So I rolled to face him, said “what are you thinkin’?”
He answered back to me without even blinkin’ he said
“I’m thinkin’ about dancin’ and drinkin’”
So I said “Ooh why don’t we go
Pedaling two by two like the people
Who clearly know what to do with a Friday night?”
He said “I got the Macarena. Girl get your bike!”
5 years later we’re still together
Got a tandem bike with a baby trailer
Out livin’ the dream not far from that old river
Some summer nights I still think about
The first days when we started out
Just a friendly Friday phone call picnic dinner
Where he said “Ooh why don’t we go
Pedaling two by two like the people
Who clearly know what to do with a Friday night.”
He said “I got the mozzarella. Girl get your bike!”
Girl get your bike
Girl get your bike
Girl get your bike
